About Country

Russia-Ukraine war that began on 24 February 2022. The conflict has led to widespread displacement and humanitarian crises, particularly in the eastern regions. The escalation of hostilities has forced many Ukrainians to flee their homes in search of safety and shelter. This has resulted in internal displacement within Ukraine, as well as an influx of Ukrainian refugees seeking refuge in neighboring countries.

Context in Country

The Ukraine Mission, spanning the years 2022 and 2023, focused on providing essential medical services and humanitarian aid across various regions of the country. Visiting seven major hospitals in eastern, central, and western Ukraine, the mission aimed to assess and address the medical needs of the population.

Medical and humanitarian needs assessments were conducted in several cities, including Kyiv, Poltava, Zhytomyr, Odessa, Dnipro (in both 2022 and 2023), Kharkiv, Zaporizha, and Lviv. These assessments helped identify critical areas requiring intervention and support.

The mission primarily focused on providing medical care, including complex reconstructive and plastic surgeries for victims of attacks. Additionally, training sessions and workshops were conducted to enhance the skills of local medical professionals. A total of 40 doctors were trained during surgeries, while three workshops were organized for over 37 doctors with various surgical specialties.

In collaboration with the Ukrainian health ministry and other partners, the mission delivered eight HEST (Hostile Environment Surgical Training) courses to Ukrainian doctors. These courses, conducted in different cities such as Poltava, Zhytomyr, Odessa, Dnipro (in 2022), Kharkiv, Zaporizha, and Lviv (Dnipro in 2023), trained a total of 332 participants. Additionally, four HEAT (Hostile Environment Anesthesia Training) courses were conducted in Lviv, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzha, and Poltava, with a total of 68 trainees.

Furthermore, a workshop on mental health and psychological support was organized in Kyiv, addressing the critical aspect of psychological well-being amidst challenging circumstances. Additionally, a scientific and practical event titled “Lecture and training class: Medical and psychological aspects of war” was held in Kyiv in collaboration with the International Academy of Personal Management, providing valuable insights and resources for volunteer doctors involved in humanitarian efforts.
