Objectives

UOSSM’s MHPSS program, initiated in 2014, aims to safeguard psychosocial well-being, prevent and treat mental health disorders for individuals in crises, encompassing host communities and Internally Displaced People (IDPs) of all ages and genders. The program seeks to provide comprehensive services covering the Inter Agencies Standing Committees (IASC) pyramid, addressing a wide range of MHPSS issues, including social problems, emotional distress, and various mental disorders.

Zainab and Noor, two sisters, are grappling with the challenges posed by a rare skin disease, compounded by the loss of their father eight years ago. In the absence of their father, their family struggles financially, unable to afford the medical treatment they urgently need.

Adullah  a 13-year-old orphan dreams of becoming a pharmacist. Despite facing challenging circumstances, he remains resilient. Football provides solace, but his visual impairment in his right eye adds further difficulty.

Services

UOSSM implements diverse intervention models, including Mental Health (MH) centers with acute inpatient units, general MH centers, integrated MHPSS services in healthcare programs, Mental Health Mobile Clinics (MHMCs), and remotely provided MHPSS services. The organization also offers structured and evidence-based MHPSS activities, such as psychiatric management, mhGAP care, interpersonal therapy, psychoeducation, and awareness-raising initiatives.

Activities

UOSSM engages in a variety of structured and sustained MHPSS activities, ranging from specialized psychiatric management to community-based capacity building. Activities include individual psychoeducation, Psychological First Aid (PFA), Teaching Recovery Techniques program (TRT) for children, and the detection and referral system. The organization emphasizes community-based capacity building and awareness-raising initiatives.

Networking

UOSSM actively participates in memberships, playing a Co-lead role with WHO in the MHPSS technical working group. The organization has established partnerships with key stakeholders and donors, including EU, GIZ, WHO, UNOCHA, IRC, EF, and CVT.

Future Plans

In collaboration with WHO – MHPSS TWG for NWS, UOSSM plans to enhance and upgrade its MHPSS modules in 2021 and 2022. Future initiatives include reactivating the School Mental Health module, offering a General Psychiatry Diploma, upgrading PSWs capacity, implementing telepsychiatry in MHPSS hospitals, and establishing governance structures for effective coordination and improvement of MHPSS services on the field.
