UOSSM International
Damascus, December 8, 2024
After 24 years in power, former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad has fled Damascus. This marks a turning point in the nearly 14-year struggle of the Syrian people, who took to the streets in pursuit of freedom and dignity. Despite numerous political peace initiatives and negotiations, no significant progress was achieved. Civilians endured relentless attacks, displacement, detentions, and suffering in camps, neighboring countries, and perilous journeys across seas in search of freedom.
On November 27, opposition forces launched a military operation from Northwest Syria, liberating Aleppo, Hama, and Homs. Simultaneously, cities in the south, including Sweida, Deraa, and Damascus suburbs, rose up and swiftly freed themselves from Assad’s security forces.
Opposition leaders have called on fighters and civilians to protect state institutions, emphasizing: no vandalism, no revenge, and safe passage for those who surrender their arms or flee.
For the past 13 years, UOSSM has been committed to providing humanitarian aid to all Syrians. Despite losing colleagues and facilities to airstrikes, our resolve has never wavered. Dr. Anas Al-Kassem, President of UOSSM International, stated: “Today, we honor the memory of our colleagues and humanitarian workers who lost their lives serving others. We face an enormous challenge to continue our mission, but we remain firmly committed to supporting all people, everywhere.”
Today, we celebrate this historic moment with the Syrian people. We call on all Syrians—leaders and citizens alike—to remember the principles on which the revolution began: freedom, dignity, and justice for all. The revolution’s chants united us as one people, pledging to protect human dignity, uphold justice, and build a peaceful civic state governed by the rule of law.
Shadi Alshhadeh, UOSSM’s Communication Manager, stated:
“Syria begins a new journey today, with an opportunity to become a land of freedom, peace, dignity, and the rule of law for all its people. It is a chance to transform fear into trust, anger into constructive action, and division into unity. At UOSSM, we remain steadfast in our commitment to this cause.”
