About Country

Mozambique faces significant humanitarian challenges, including natural disasters, food insecurity, and the impact of conflict and violence. Cyclones, floods, and droughts occur regularly in Mozambique, displacing thousands of people and causing widespread destruction to homes, crops, and infrastructure. Additionally, the northern regions of Mozambique have experienced a surge in violence and insurgency in recent years, leading to displacement and humanitarian needs. International aid organizations, along with the Mozambican government and local communities, work to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by crises, including emergency food aid, shelter, healthcare, and education. However, funding shortages and access constraints often limit the scale and effectiveness of humanitarian response efforts in Mozambique

Context in Country

Mozambique Cataract Campaigns

Context Analysis:

In view of the context, UOSSM, in collaboration with IsDB, has mobilised its resources and conducted three missions aiming at conducting Cataract operations and providing training to local doctors to ensure long lasting provision of services. Each mission covered eight locations in five provinces across Mozambique to ensure wild range of access for patinates and valuable variety of capacity building.

  • Positive Outcomes:
    • Scale and Impact: Across three medical campaigns, we successfully performed 5,000 cataract surgeries, significantly reducing the prevalence of visual impairment in the targeted regions.
    • Capacity Building: Over 100 local healthcare professionals, including ophthalmologists, residents, nurses, and technicians, were trained in advanced surgical techniques, notably Phacoemulsification. This training not only increased local capacity but also ensured the sustainability of the project.

  • Challenges and Solutions:
    • Geographical and Logistical Challenges: Operating in multiple locations across five provinces posed logistical difficulties. We addressed this by increasing the workforce, adopting an agile management approach, and implementing a phased operation strategy.
    • Adaptability: We transitioned from an initial two-phase plan to a more intensive, localized campaign model to avoid disruptions due to the rainy season and local elections, ensuring timely completion of our objectives.
    • Language Solutions: To overcome the language barrier, we employed translators proficient in both Portuguese and English, sourced locally from Mozambique and internationally. This proactive measure ensured smooth communication between international experts and local teams, enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the campaigns.

  1. Direct Beneficiaries (Number and Type):
  • The campaigns directly benefited 5,000 people, primarily elderly people, however many young and children needed the surgeries and received the, the majority was of those who come from low socioeconomic backgrounds in remote areas across Mozambique. These people received free, high-quality cataract surgeries, enabling them to regain their vision and improve their quality of life.
  • Training and Capacity Building: We focused on building local capacity by training over 100 local healthcare professionals in advanced ophthalmic techniques.

  1. Indirect Beneficiaries (Number and Type):
  • The indirect beneficiaries include the families and communities of the patients. Restoring sight to 5,000 individuals positively impacted approximately 25,000 people. The return of these individuals to productive roles in their households and communities has fostered economic and social improvements.

  1. Measures in Favor of the Sustainability of the Project:
  • Training and Capacity Building: We focused on building local capacity by training over 100 local healthcare professionals in advanced ophthalmic techniques. This ensures that the local healthcare system can continue to provide high-quality eye care independently.
  • Continued Support: The Mozambique Ministry of Health has committed to supporting these efforts post-campaign, and additional partnerships are being explored to secure ongoing training and support.

  • Direct Beneficiaries: 5,000 people.
