EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO RECENT EARTHQUAKES IN TURKEY AND SYRIA

Feb 21st, 2023

Paris, France – Following the recent devastating earthquakes in southern Turkey and northern Syria, two additional seismic events, measuring 6.4 and 5.8 magnitudes, have once again rocked the region, instilling fear and uncertainty among residents. Initial reports from UOSSM indicate at least 94 injuries and numerous collapsed buildings in northwest Syria, with similar reports emerging from Turkey where at least three fatalities and over 123 injuries have been recorded.

These latest tremors come amidst ongoing aftershocks following the catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake on February 6, which claimed the lives of over 46,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands more. The structural integrity of many buildings remains compromised, increasing the risk of further collapses and casualties.

UOSSM has been at the forefront of emergency response efforts since the initial earthquake, providing vital medical care, including mental health services, through mobile clinics and hospitals. Additionally, our local partners have been instrumental in rescue and recovery operations, distributing essential supplies such as shelter, food, and clothing to those in need.

The situation on the ground underscores the urgent need for increased global humanitarian support to facilitate the delivery of essential aid. With only three authorized crossing points for humanitarian assistance between Turkey and Syria, collective solidarity is imperative to ensure a swift and effective response in the coming weeks and months.

Dr. Anas Alkassem, Co-founder and Vice Chairman of UOSSM Canada, was present at Aqrabat Hospital during the earthquakes, ensuring the safety of patients and staff. Dr. Ghanem Tayara, President of UOSSM International, expressed solidarity with the affected communities and emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts to mitigate further suffering and loss.
