Since October 2023, the people of Gaza have faced immense hardship, with countless lives affected by the ongoing crisis. The health system, already strained by years of challenges, is now struggling to meet the overwhelming needs of the population. By September 2024, over 41,000 people had tragically lost their lives, including 900 humanitarian workers, while more than 90,000 have been injured. Among the victims was our colleague, Amany Al Derby, a psychologist with UOSSM USA, who lost her life on May 7, 2024, along with her four children. Her husband remains in critical condition.
The suffering endured by the people of Gaza has left deep physical and emotional scars, including severe injuries and psychological trauma. Many hospitals are no longer functioning, with 23 out of 38 facilities out of service and 130 ambulances unable to operate. The lack of essential resources such as fuel and electricity has further strained the health system, making it extremely difficult to provide care for those in need.
More than 1.9 million Palestinians have been displaced from their homes, finding temporary refuge in overcrowded shelters with limited access to clean water, food, or healthcare. This situation has led to widespread health issues, including respiratory infections, malnutrition, and skin diseases. The need for immediate access to primary and specialized healthcare has never been more urgent.
In response to this crisis, UOSSM has been working tirelessly alongside our partners from the very beginning. Medical missions led by expert doctors have been dispatched to offer critical care. Additionally, UOSSM has facilitated the transport of children in need of specialized treatment to Geneva, Switzerland, where they received the urgent care they required.
Currently, UOSSM International operates four medical points in Gaza, providing essential healthcare services to those seeking refuge in shelters located in Rafah and the Middle Area governorates (Deir El Balah). Despite many challenges, these medical points have already cared for over 18,000 people, including children.
Our medical points offer essential primary healthcare, mental health support and psychosocial care, aiming to reduce suffering and loss of life among those affected. Each month, these efforts benefit more than 10,000 people, including the transportation of those requiring urgent medical attention.
Vaccination Campaign for Children
Since July 2024, we’ve launched a vaccination campaign, protecting hundreds of infants from preventable diseases such as polio, which has become a concern due to poor sanitation and unsafe water. These vaccinations are critical for safeguarding the health and future of Gaza’s children.
Your unwavering support has been instrumental in helping us continue this life-saving work. Together, we are providing care and hope to the people of Gaza, ensuring that children, women, and the elderly receive the help they desperately need.
