The humanitarian crisis in northern Syria has reached a critical level, UOSSM International is deeply concerned about the escalation in military operations in Syria, particularly the airstrikes against civilians and civil facilities. The situation has dramatically worsened over past 24 hours overwhelmed local healthcare facilities, and led to severe shortages of essential medical supplies.
Over the course of the past few hours during the day, December 2, 2024. the situation took a devastating turn as the Ibn Sina Dialysis Center in Idlib – A health facilities provides essential lifesaving services, operated by UOSSM – was targeted by an airstrike. Alongside the dialysis center, the Idlib Health Directorate and the University Hospital in Idlib were also struck. These attacks came one day after a similar attack on Aleppo University Hospital in which three of our ambulances were thrown out of service. Targeting humanitarian health facilities amounts to war crimes and is further straining an already overwhelmed healthcare system, leaving many patients without access to life-saving care. These are still early reports related to civilians and humanitarian work.
In response to the current situation, UOSSM has launched an emergency intervention, deploying mobile medical clinics, medical professionals from various specialties within our staff have mobilized to support hospitals in Aleppo, vehicles of our referral and ambulance system were alerted and put to service saving lives of dozens of people. Hospitals of UOSSM have received hundreds of cases and conducted over 350 trauma surgery including over a 100 major, lifesaving, surgery.
Dr Monzer Yazji, board member fo UOSSM International says: “This reminds me of the past years, when we were in Aleppo, we have lost many of our doctor colleagues, today this shall not be repeated, humanitarian workers, medical staff and civilians must be always protected. All parties must show ultimate respect to international laws”
UOSSM calls for an urgent support to secure medications, medical supplies, specialized equipment and new ambulances that save lives. We urge you to act and donate immediately.
Together we will alleviate the suffering of those in desperate need and ensure lifesaving healthcare remains accessible to the most vulnerable.
