A New Chapter for Syria

A New Chapter for Syria

A New Chapter for Syria

UOSSM International
Geneva, December 12, 2024

The fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, marks a pivotal moment in Syria’s history. After years of systematic neglect and targeted attacks, the country’s healthcare system is at the brink of collapse, leaving millions of civilians in dire need of medical care. UOSSM International remains on the ground, responding to urgent needs while preparing for a brighter future for Syria.

In Northwest Syria, UOSSM is maintaining its response and prioritizing essential health, nutrition, and mental health services, particularly for displaced populations and returnees. Despite significant challenges, we are working tirelessly to ensure service delivery in areas of high need, providing vulnerable communities with the care they deserve. Over the past few days, UOSSM has managed 1,356 trauma cases, including 171 major surgeries, at key hospitals such as Al-Andalus and Jisr Ash-Shughur. Two mobile clinics in Harim and Qah have delivered 2,096 consultations, addressing health, nutrition, mental health, and protection needs. Emergency medical and supply deliveries have reached hospitals in Ar-Rastan and Talbiseh, while ambulances have been deployed to Aleppo, Hama, and Damascus to extend our reach.

At the same time, UOSSM is expanding its emergency response to newly accessible regions, including Damascus. Our efforts focus on addressing the immediate needs of ex-detainee survivors, providing tailored medical and psychological care to help them recover from the atrocities they endured.

Understanding the scope of Syria’s healthcare challenges is vital. That’s why UOSSM is collaborating with local and international partners to conduct comprehensive needs assessments across the country. These evaluations aim to identify critical gaps in healthcare, mental health, nutrition, and protection services, guiding us toward strategic, evidence-based interventions.

Looking ahead, UOSSM is committed to developing sustainable solutions for Syria’s healthcare system. Our vision includes integrated services that combine healthcare with mental health support, nutrition, and protection, providing holistic care to communities that have suffered for far too long.

Dr. Monzer Yazji, a board member of UOSSM International, stated the following in a video from the heart of Damascus, where he traveled directly from the USA to be in Syria during these joyful moments.

As we step into this new chapter, UOSSM is determined to partner with local and international organizations to strengthen Syria’s health system. With your support, we can ensure that lifesaving care reaches those who need it most, creating a foundation for a healthier, more just Syria.
