Military Operations in Syria While the Region Faces Ongoing Challenges

UOSSM International
Geneva, December 1, 2024

UOSSM International is deeply concerned about the ongoing military operations in Syria. Over the course of just three days, from November 26 to November 28, at least 125 incidents of shelling, airstrikes, and other attacks were reported in Idlib and western Aleppo. These hostilities have claimed the lives of more than 27 civilians, including eight children, and left dozens of others injured. Today, vehicles of UOSSM referral and ambulance system were targeted as in service, at least three ambulances were damaged and thrown out of service, fortunately no human damages. These are still early reports related to civilians and humanitarian work.

In response to this crisis, UOSSM has launched an emergency intervention, deploying three mobile medical clinics to emergency shelter locations. Additionally, 30 medical professionals from various specialties within our staff have mobilized to support hospitals in Aleppo, vehicles of our referral and ambulance system were alerted and put to service saving lives of dozens of people. Aqrabat and Al-Andalus Hospitals, both operated by UOSSM, have received numerous urgent cases requiring major surgeries and has treated dozens of injured individuals.

Despite our best efforts, the escalating violence has forced UOSSM to suspend several key humanitarian activities.

“Military attacks on civilian neighborhoods, especially airstrikes, must cease immediately. Such actions are unjustifiable under any circumstances. We are gravely concerned about the impact on civilians and call on all parties to ensure their protection. Special attention must be given to women, children, and humanitarian workers, who must always be granted safe spaces and passages,” said Dr. Anas Al Kassem, President of UOSSM International. He continued, “Our medical personnel are doing everything they can to respond, but they require the protection and support of the international community to sustain their lifesaving work. All parties must respect international humanitarian laws.”

Hospitals and medical facilities are urgently calling for support, particularly in the form of medications, medical supplies, and specialized equipment.

Syria is grappling with an escalating humanitarian crisis. UOSSM remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering emergency medical relief, despite immense challenges. Our healthcare facilities and dedicated teams continue to work tirelessly to alleviate suffering.

We urge you to sustain your support for these critical medical services. Your immediate contributions can help to secure medications, medical supplies, specialized equipment and new ambulances that save lives. Together we will alleviate the suffering of those in desperate need and ensure lifesaving healthcare remains accessible to the most vulnerable.
