Orphaned since birth, Fakhr, a 9-year-old boy, is among the many children grappling with adversity following the loss of a parent. Despite his arthritis condition, Fakhr’s aspirations to attend school and play football remain steadfast.

Zainab & Nour Case

Zainab and Noor, two sisters, are grappling with the challenges posed by a rare skin disease, compounded by the loss of their father eight years ago. In the absence of their father, their family struggles financially, unable to afford the medical treatment they urgently need.

Abdullah

Adullah  a 13-year-old orphan dreams of becoming a pharmacist. Despite facing challenging circumstances, he remains resilient. Football provides solace, but his visual impairment in his right eye adds further difficulty.

Purpose and Vision:

At its core, the UOSSM Medical Complex is driven by a profound vision: to empower communities with access to high-quality, specialized healthcare services, thereby fostering a healthier and more resilient population. Guided by this vision, the complex endeavors to not only address immediate medical needs but also to lay the foundation for sustainable health outcomes and long-term well-being.

Components:

  • Specialized Children’s and Women’s Surgical Hospital: This hospital is dedicated to providing advanced surgical interventions tailored to the unique healthcare needs of children and women. Equipped with modern facilities, it offers a range of specialized procedures to address pediatric and gynecological conditions, ensuring optimal care for patients of all ages.

 

  • Specialized Cancer Center: Committed to combating cancer comprehensively, this center delivers a spectrum of medical interventions for cancer patients. From precise diagnostics to cutting-edge treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, it provides comprehensive care under one roof, fostering hope and healing for individuals battling cancer.

 

  • Specialized Physical Therapy and Prosthetics Center: This center is designed to support patients on their journey to recovery, delivering tailored rehabilitation services for those recuperating from injuries, surgeries, or disabilities. Through personalized physical therapy programs and access to state-of-the-art prosthetic devices, it aims to enhance patient mobility, independence, and quality of life.

 

  • Research and Development Center: The complex houses a Training and Capacity Building Center, serving as a hub for advancing healthcare expertise and infrastructure within the community. By offering continuous medical education, training courses, workshops, conferences, and research opportunities, it empowers healthcare stakeholders and local NGOs while bolstering institutional capacities in the health sector.

First Phase of the Project

The first phase involves constructing the Specialized Children’s and Women’s Surgical Hospital, equipped with the latest medical technologies. Patients will have access to comprehensive specialized healthcare services conveniently located in one place, sparing them the inconvenience of lengthy travels.  It will include:

  • 10 specialized outpatient clinics (over five specifically for children)
  • Emergency department
  • Laboratory diagnostics and radiology services
  • Pediatric surgery wing
  • Natural and cesarean birth unit (equipped with 40 incubators)
  • General surgery department (equipped with four operating rooms)
  • 100-bed inpatient wing
  • Three intensive care units
  • Additional services such as a pharmacy and mental health care

First Phase Impact:

The UOSSM Medical Complex is expected to have a significant impact on healthcare in northern Syria:

  • Serving over 10,000 beneficiaries monthly
  • Providing care to 6,000 children
  • Conducting 12,000 medical consultations monthly
  • Facilitating 350 births (natural and cesarean) monthly
  • Performing 250 major surgeries and 400 minor surgeries monthly
  • Significantly enhancing medical services in the region.

Long-Term Impact on the Health Sector in Northern Syria:

The UOSSM Medical Complex is a crucial first step in preventing the deterioration of the healthcare sector in northwest Syria and rebuilding the region’s healthcare system. Its comprehensive and integrated approach will:

Mitigate Healthcare Gaps: By addressing the immediate healthcare gaps in specialized medical services, the complex will prevent further deterioration of the health sector and improve the overall quality of care.

Promote Health Resilience: The emphasis on training and capacity building will ensure that the healthcare system is resilient and capable of adapting to future challenges, thereby strengthening the overall health infrastructure.

Catalyze Rebuilding Efforts: As the first significant healthcare facility of its kind in the region, the UOSSM Medical Complex will serve as a model for future healthcare projects, catalyzing further investments and efforts to rebuild Syria’s healthcare system.
